When coyotes grow too comfortable in a community, they lose their natural wariness of people — and that’s when conflicts with residents and pets rise. A South Orange County city wanted to get ahead of that with a proactive, city-wide coyote management program — not just reacting to individual sightings, but restoring the healthy fear of humans that keeps a whole community safer.
What coyote “hazing” actually is
Hazing is a proven, humane coyote-management technique: using safe, aversive conditioning to teach coyotes to avoid people and developed areas, restoring their natural wariness. Done correctly and consistently — and paired with repellents and community-wide coordination — it reduces bold coyote behavior and keeps residents and pets safer, without simply relocating the problem.

What we did
- Coyote hazing program — carried out aversive-conditioning hazing to restore the coyotes’ natural wariness of people and discourage them from developed, resident-heavy areas.
- Repellents — applied repellent measures to reinforce the program and steer coyotes away from problem areas.
- Program-level approach — managed it as an ongoing, city-scale effort rather than a one-off response.
The result
The city gained a proactive, humane coyote management program aimed at reducing conflicts and keeping residents and pets safer — professional, program-level wildlife management that protects an entire community.
