- Moles leave a volcano-shaped mound with the hole in the middle, plus raised surface ridges where they tunnel just under the turf. Moles eat insects and worms, not roots, so plant loss points away from moles.
- Ground squirrels leave open holes with no mound plugging them, and you will usually see the animal above ground during the day. Gophers almost never show themselves.
