Why Long Beach has a rodent problem
Long Beach has close to ideal roof rat conditions, and the housing stock is the reason. Large parts of the city were built before 1960, which means wood-frame construction, real attics, crawl spaces, and decades of small settling gaps that never got sealed. Layer on mature landscaping, palms, and the fruit trees in older neighborhoods, and rats have food, cover and highways all in one place.
The overhead routes are what people miss. Roof rats travel utility lines, fence tops and overhanging branches, and they enter high rather than at ground level. Roof rats and Norway rats are not the same problem

- Roof rats are the common one across Los Angeles and Orange County. Slim, dark, with a tail longer than the body. They are excellent climbers and live high, in attics, wall voids, palms and dense landscaping. If you hear scratching or running overhead at night, it is almost certainly roof rats.
- Norway rats are heavier and blunt-nosed with a shorter tail. They burrow, and they stay low, in crawl spaces, under slabs, along foundations, near sewer and drain lines. Their damage shows up at ground level.
- House mice get in through much smaller openings and reproduce faster, so a small mouse problem becomes a large one quickly. A mouse only needs a gap the width of a pencil.

Nothing dramatic, but a few things genuinely help. Stop putting bait out, because a rodent that dies inside a wall is a problem we then have to find. Pick up fallen fruit and pet food left outside overnight. Trim branches that touch the roofline, since that is a bridge. And note where and when you hear activity, because the timing and location tell us a lot before we ever open the attic.
