Denning season runs from roughly February into spring, which is also when the risk goes up, because a female with young under your deck is far more likely to spray and far harder to move. Handling it before that window is considerably easier than handling it during.
The signs people miss
- Small cone-shaped holes in the lawn, appearing overnight. That is a skunk digging grubs, and it is often the first sign, before any smell.
- Fresh dirt fanned out at the edge of a deck, shed or foundation.
- A faint musky odor that comes and goes rather than a single strong event. Constant low-level smell means residency.
- Pets suddenly obsessed with one corner of the yard.
How we handle it
Carefully, because the failure mode here is memorable. We confirm the den and determine whether young are present before anything else. We remove the animals with methods chosen to minimise the chance of spraying — this is where experience genuinely matters.
Then we close the space properly. Skunk exclusion means digging in a barrier below grade, because an animal that digs will simply go under anything installed at surface level. Screening the visible gap is why people call us after someone else has already been out.

The Huntington Beach skunk dens nobody checks
This city has an unusual number of mobile home and coach home parks, strung along Beach Boulevard south of Adams and along Pacific Coast Highway toward the Santa Ana River. Skirting is the whole story in those parks. One panel popped loose at a corner, or a section never refastened after a plumbing repair, and there is a warm, dry, fully enclosed run under the entire unit. It is the most common skunk den we open in Huntington Beach, and the one people most often try to close by simply pushing the panel back.
The other pocket is the Ellis-Goldenwest quarter. Horse property, tack rooms, feed bins and soft graded ground sit a few hundred feet from ordinary tract streets, and skunks move between the two every night. Further south, the irrigated turf around Murdy Park and Edison Park brings grubs close to the surface in fall, which is when we get overnight lawn damage calls from streets that have never had a skunk before.

Leave the skirting alone. If you close the only exit with an animal inside, you have made it much worse, and from February into spring there may be young under there as well. We confirm what is using the space and whether there is a litter, remove them, then dig a barrier in below grade around the perimeter rather than screwing the loose panel back on. Park management usually wants the repair documented, and we write it up.
Does the horse property around Ellis and Goldenwest bring skunks into the surrounding streets?
It supports them. Spilled feed, water troughs, insects in bedding and soft graded ground for digging is close to a complete package, and the stables sit within a short walk of ordinary residential blocks. That does not mean the neighbors with horses caused your problem. It means the nearby population is steady, so pulling one animal out without closing the void under your deck, shed or slab edge just leaves the spot open for the next one.
Our lawn near Murdy Park gets torn up overnight every fall. Skunk or gopher?
Look at the shape of the damage. Skunks leave shallow cone-shaped divots scattered across the turf, an inch or two deep, with no mound of soil. Gophers leave fan-shaped mounds of fresh dirt with a plugged hole in the middle. Fall is when irrigated turf here holds grubs near the surface, which pulls skunks onto lawns that have never had them. Divots with no mound means a den on your property or on the one next door.
