Newport Beach specifically
Newport Beach is three different environments in one city. The Upper Newport Bay ecological reserve is genuine protected wildlife habitat sitting directly against residential streets. The Peninsula and Balboa Island are dense, older, largely built before modern codes, with crawl spaces and shared walls. And the bluff and canyon neighborhoods on the inland side back onto open terrain. Salt air corrodes vents and flashing faster here than inland, which quietly opens entry points nobody is watching for.
Raised foundations across the older Peninsula and Island properties give skunks exactly the crawl space they look for, and sandy soil makes digging under a slab edge or a shed considerably easier than it is inland. On the bluff side, the voids left where a deck or foundation meets sloped ground are the usual den.
Where they actually are
Skunks are not climbers. Almost every skunk problem we handle is underneath something: a deck, a shed, a porch, a raised foundation, a crawl space, or the void left where a slab meets sloped ground. If you are smelling skunk regularly rather than occasionally, one is living on your property, not passing through.
Denning season runs from roughly February into spring, which is also when the risk goes up, because a female with young under your deck is far more likely to spray and far harder to move. Handling it before that window is considerably easier than handling it during.
The signs people miss
- Small cone-shaped holes in the lawn, appearing overnight. That is a skunk digging grubs, and it is often the first sign, before any smell.
- Fresh dirt fanned out at the edge of a deck, shed or foundation.
- A faint musky odor that comes and goes rather than a single strong event. Constant low-level smell means residency.
- Pets suddenly obsessed with one corner of the yard.
How we handle it
Carefully, because the failure mode here is memorable. We confirm the den and determine whether young are present before anything else. We remove the animals with methods chosen to minimise the chance of spraying — this is where experience genuinely matters.
Then we close the space properly. Skunk exclusion means digging in a barrier below grade, because an animal that digs will simply go under anything installed at surface level. Screening the visible gap is why people call us after someone else has already been out.

Skunk denning in Newport Beach, island to canyon
The older cottages on Balboa Island, Little Balboa Island and the Peninsula sit on short crawl spaces over dredge fill and beach sand. Crawl vents are only a few inches above grade, the framing runs close to the ground, and there is no hardpan to slow any digging down. A skunk can be under a stair stringer, a front stoop or a low bayfront deck in one night. Once it is under an island cottage, the shared property lines mean the smell stops being only yours.
Corona del Mar and Newport Coast work the other way around. Buck Gully and Morning Canyon carry coastal sage scrub right up to the back fences of the flower streets, and skunks climb the slope and settle into the void under a cantilevered deck. Inland, the irrigated lawns around Harbor View Homes and Big Canyon show the other sign first, and at the north end of the city the equestrian lots in Santa Ana Heights add feed, shavings and stall bedding to the draw.

A steady low-level smell usually means one is resident somewhere close, though on the Peninsula it may be under your neighbor’s stoop rather than yours. We check crawl vents, stair stringers, deck edges and the gap where framing meets sand on both properties before setting anything. If the den turns out to be next door, we tell you that rather than work your yard and bill you for it.
Our Corona del Mar yard sits above Buck Gully. Can we just block the hole under the deck?
Not on its own, and not at surface level. A skunk that has been using that void will dig back under anything laid on top of the ground, and on a slope above the gully there is usually more than one way in. The barrier has to go below grade and follow the footing. We also confirm nothing is underneath first, because closing an animal in under a deck above a canyon is a much harder problem to undo.
Shallow holes keep appearing overnight in our lawn in the Port streets. Skunk or gophers?
Cone-shaped divots an inch or two deep, scattered across irrigated turf, are a skunk working for grubs. Gophers push up mounds of loose soil with a plugged hole off to one side, and they work in daylight as well as after dark. The Harbor View lawns get watered enough to hold grubs near the surface, which is why skunks favor them. On these streets the digging usually shows up well before any smell does.
